Rescue Dog Course
After working for a large rescue organisation and conducting home visits for numerous dogs, it became clear to me that even the nicest and calmest of dogs needed an extra level of dedication and patience to allow them to integrate into their new home. The purpose of this course is to give the new owner advice and support to help make the transition as smooth and problem free as possible.
Sometimes, even dogs that have been properly assessed and trained in the shelter environment can show unwanted or unexpected behaviours once they arrive in their new home. This course gives you the peace of mind that should your dog start to behave in a way that concerns you, there is someone available, who is qualified to offer support and advice should you need it – as well as spending time with you working through a tailor made training plan designed for your individual dog.
The course consists of 3 sessions held within a period of 6 weeks, in your home, with each session lasting approximately 11/2 hours. Advice will cover:
Socialisation and Habituation (for puppies).
Chewing
House Training
Breed Specific Behaviours
Jumping Up
Exercise levels/play
Any other concerns you may have
Although the training plan will be tailor made to suit your individual dog’s breed and needs, the basics that will be covered include:
Watch (attention to the owner)
Sit
Down
Recall/ Whistle Training
Leave
Drop
Loose lead walking and Heel
Phone and email follow-up are included for the duration of the course.
As with any training, success depends on the owner’s commitment and ability to remain calm, fair and consistent. Please note that all training methods taught are based on scientific principles and learning theory, without resorting to punitive, unkind or aversive methods. Trust, between the owner and the dog is the single most important factor in building a solid and happy relationship, there is no need for the ‘old fashioned’ methods which suppress the dogs natural behaviour and lead to fear and unhappiness on the part of the dog and often anger and frustration for the owner.
